My friends and those that follow me on social media know that I take my burgers seriously. Of all the photos I have on Facebook, I think I have more of my favorite burgers then I do of my own wife. That having been said, the burger game is something that has come up in the last few years in Phnom Penh and I've had just about every one of them. But of all the burgers, the best one in town has to be the Tonle Burger at Century 9 Inspired Eatery in the Russian Market area.
I know that there are many restaurants in town that claim to use American beef, but you can definitely tell this is the case at Century 9. The patty tastes like American beef and is of a quality that so far has not been matched in this city. It is cooked to order and has a nice char on the outside to give it that slightly crispy texture on the exterior that any good burger should have. Then the patty is topped with fried onion strings and these are so good they should think about serving it as an appetizer as I definitely would order it. The sauce for the burger is this rich and decadent garlic aioli that is smothered generously throughout the sandwich. Honestly it has to be the most delicious condiment I have had on a burger in a while. The bun is a warm and fluffy brioche that is toasted to perfection on the outside. It is served with an order of crinkle cut fries for only $7.50.
There are many other great items on the menu and they often have specials on different burgers for only $5 on different weeks. Other items to try are the fish burger which is fried to a perfect golden brown and their chicken strips which comes with spicy BBQ sauce. The staff at Century 9 is very welcoming and is very knowledgeable about their menu. There is air conditioned seating on the inside and outdoor seating as well. The Russian Market area is a bit out from the center of town, but your trip will definitely be worth it.
Cambodian Food Scene
Cambodia is surprisingly filled with many great restaurants, from inexpensive to those closer to Western prices. These are just a collection of my favorite places to eat throughout the country.
